Pegglesworth 3rd October 2014 Report

Pegglesworth_3_Oct

The Worcester Gundog Society held a 12 dog novice retriever stake at the Pegglesworth estate by kind permission of Mrs. Ebeid and Estate manager Mr. Stephen Malley on October 3rd.
The Judges were Mrs. Tess Lawrence, Mr. Graham Bird, Mrs. Karen McCarthy and Mr. Ray Davies.
The card was exclusively made up of Labradors with the running order unchanged on the day. The trial started promptly at 09.30 after an introduction and safety briefing by the Field trial secretary and then the gallery, judges and competitors moved on to the first drive.
The line was split with Tess Lawrence and Ray Davies on the right and Karen McCarthy and Graham Bird on the left with the guns in a horseshoe formation in between them. During the drive of Mallard, a single dog was lost through steadiness and the guns clinically dropped the game into a field of white grass and also over a stock fence just into a section of deciduous woodland. Three further dogs were lost during round one mainkly through failing to make the mark and pulling away from the retrieve.
The second drive was of mixed Partridge and Pheasant with the remaining dogs standing in line with the guns.
Again game was dropped to the front and also into woodland behind. Several dogs found the game tempting and were eliminated. Mrs. Claire Raymond’s Black Lab dog made short work of two runners but was then eliminated on a very testing runner as second dog up a track and into heavy cover.
Some excellent handling and hunting allowed Haydn Willmott’s Black Lab to achieve a two dog eye wipe and demonstrate superb game finding ability.
The trial moved onto a third drive with game being produced over the guns and being dropped over stock fencing into set aside. This allowed the dogs to sort out the remainder of the trial with Mr. Marcus Langford handling Black lab Welcome Shot to shine through and achieve first Place. Guns nhoice was awarded to Mrs.
Claire Raymond.
